Romans 13 tells us to obey political authorities; in Acts 5 the apostles tell the Jewish leaders that they “must obey God rather than men.” How are we to make sense of these and other passages that seem to present conflicting answers to the question of the relationship between church and state? It is easy to see why Christians have offered different solutions to this problem, and why it threatens to divide Christians to this day. This 4-week course will explore modern secular individualism, the classical Anglican approach to sacred and secular authority, and will give special emphasis to two Canadian exemplars of this tradition: Stephen Leacock and George Grant.

  • October 30: Richard Hooker and Classical Anglican Political Theology (Ron Dart)
  • November 6: John Locke, Individualism, and Modern Approaches to Church and State (Tyler Chamberlain)
  • November 13: Canadian Anglican Toryism – Stephen Leacock (Ron Dart)
  • November 20: Canadian Anglican Toryism – George Grant (Ron Dart)
